Source Notes: Letter to her niece, 18 August 1980, in Letters of a Nation: A Collection of Extraordinary American Letters, ed. Andrew Carroll (1997). Ford wrote this letter for her niece, Jennifer Sullivan (living in Brooklyn), on her sixteenth birthday. She explains the importance of finding purpose and commitment in one's life whether one lives in a war-torn country like El Salvador or in Brooklyn. Three months after writing this letter, Ford and three other American nuns were found murdered.
