Washington's Birthday is for the "Father of our Country"; Memorial Day for our "Heroic Fathers"; 4th of July for "Patriot Fathers"; Labor Day for "Laboring Fathers"; Thanksgiving Day for "Pilgrim Father[s]"; and even New Year's Day is for "Old Father Time."

This quote is linked to the event - Mother's Day
Source Notes: Quoted in Leigh Eric Schmidt, Consumer Rites: The Buying and Selling of American Holidays (section 1, "Anna Jarvis and the Churches: Sources of a New Celebration"; chapter 5, "Mother's Day Bouquet") (1995). Schmidt notes that this examination of the "patriarchy of the American calendar" was one of Anna Jarvis's "favorite devices . . . in defense of Mother's Day." He notes that churches found the celebration of Mother's Day reassuring even as early as the 1910s and 1920s because it affirmed traditional women's roles of "self-sacrificing domesticity and sentimental piety." Jarvis herself would have been excluded from the honors of the day because she "remained unmarried and childless."
