Quoted in Jack Santino, All Around the Year: Holidays and Celebrations in American Life (chapter 3, "Winter into Spring") (1994). Rogers, president of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, made his comments during the Prohibition era (1919-33), when federal law prevented the manufacture and distribution of alcoholic beverages.
