St. Patrick's day no more we'll keep his color can't be seen, For there's a bloody law agin' the wearin' of the green.

Source Notes: "Wearin' of the Green." This poem appears in The Fireside Book of Favorite American Songs (1952), edited by Margaret Bradford Boni. She notes: "No one can place the authorship of this Irish song of 1798. It is an inspired street ballad born of the sorrow and the bitterness of the people--an eloquent arraignment of England's Irish policy of the time."
