Life hurts; certain ideas and experiences hurt; one wants to clarify, to set out illuminations, to replay the old bad scenes and get the Treppenworte said -- the words one didn't have the strength or ripeness to say when those words were necessary for one's dignity or survival.

Cynthia Ozick (b. April 17, 1928, New York City, New York to William Ozick and Celia Regelson) is an American writer whose works are about Jewish American life. Ozick earned a B.A. from New York University in 1949 and a M.A. from Ohio State University in 1950.
